Cricket Match Furthers Gender Equality, Women’s Leadership

LahoreTo advance gender equality and encourage women to lead via sport, the US Consul General (CG XI) and Government College University (GCU) Lahore Vice-Chancellor (VC XI) played a cricket match.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Asghar Zaidi led his squad, which included female faculty members and players from the GCU Women’s cricket team, while the team of CG XI was led by US Consul General Lahore William K. Makaneole. In each team, there were an equal number of men and women. The match was organized by Galaxy Sports Academy and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Women Wing.

Earlier, in a match played to promote the equal participation of both genders in sports, the VC XI won the toss and invited the CG XI to bat. VC XI won the match by eight wickets after chasing the score in the final over. Prof. Zaidi said that the match provided a wonderful opportunity for the community to join together and encourage women in sports, boosting participation and furthering the cause of gender equality in the athletic sphere.

The Vice Chancellor expressed his pride in the development of women’s sports at GCU, noting that the institution has allowed women to enroll on a sports-based basis last year, organised their teams, and this year they are excelling in all inter-university competitions.

“As proof of their commitment to inclusive participation, a student with hearing impairment took part in the match as well,” informed Dr. Asghar Zaidi. William Makaneole emphasized that the US mission in Pakistan supports women’s leadership and involvement in all areas, stating that “we firmly believe that women’s full and equitable participation benefits both Pakistan and its economy.” He further added that they would continue to empower Pakistani women to succeed and fully contribute to their nation.
