Court Dismisses FIA Case Against Shabbar Zaidi

News Desk

Islamabad: The Special Court (Central-I) Karachi has dismissed a corruption case against former Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman and renowned tax expert Shabbar Zaidi, cancelling the FIR registered against him by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

In its detailed order, the court granted Zaidi and other accused a clean chit, declaring that the disbursement of tax refunds under scrutiny had been carried out lawfully and in accordance with prescribed procedures.

“The refunds were rightly paid under the laid-down law and procedures,” the court observed, adding that investigations found no evidence of criminal intent, personal gain, or collusion.

According to the court order, the FIA’s Assistant Director and Investigating Officer submitted a cancellation report (No. 57/2025), endorsed by the FIA’s legal prosecutor, recommending the case be classified as “C-Class” under Rule 24.7 of the Police Rules, 1934 — meaning it was filed on mistaken grounds without criminal intent.

After reviewing the report and hearing the FIA’s investigating officer and prosecutor, the court accepted the cancellation request and formally discharged Zaidi, FBR officials, and bank representatives from all charges.

The FIR (No. 32/2025), registered under Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947 read with Section 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code, has been cancelled accordingly.

The Director of FIA Karachi Zone also granted formal approval for the case’s cancellation and its classification as “C-Class,” confirming that the matter was closed with no evidence of wrongdoing by Zaidi or other accused individuals.
