Court Acquits Shah Mehmood Qureshi in May 9 Incidents Case

Islamabad: A lower court has acquitted former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and 14 other accused individuals in connection with the incidents of May 9.

The court ruled that the charges against Qureshi, who was accused of inciting protesters, did not meet the necessary legal standards for conviction.

Specifically, the application of Penal Code 109 was deemed inappropriate as Qureshi’s direct involvement in the alleged crime could not be established.

Additionally, the court noted that the application of MPO-19 and Section 144 was flawed, as only a designated officer could file a complaint under these provisions.

The prosecution’s case was undermined by the fact that the district magistrate was not a complainant in the case. Consequently, the court found the evidence insufficient to warrant a sentence, leading to the acquittal of Qureshi and the other accused.
