Islamabad: In a surprising yet brilliant discovery, scientists have found that chewing gum made from beans yes, beans could help combat some of the world’s most common and dangerous viruses.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Dental Medicine, in collaboration with Finnish scientists, have developed a plant-based antiviral gum that reduces viral loads in the mouth by over 95%. This gum, made from lablab beans, contains a natural protein called FRIL, which binds to and neutralizes viruses before they can spread.

The team, led by Professor Henry Daniell, tested the gum on four major viruses: two strains of herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and two strains of influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2). The results were remarkable: just one chew of gum, containing only 40 milligrams of the bean protein, reduced the virus in the mouth to almost undetectable levels.

Let that sink in: a piece of gum might soon become a key tool in fighting viral outbreaks.

This groundbreaking research, recently published in Molecular Therapy, builds upon earlier trials that showed similar success against COVID-19, suggesting that this gum could play a major role in pandemic prevention. It’s also FDA-approved for safety, making it a viable candidate for human trials.

But the potential doesn’t stop with human health. The same bean protein is now being investigated as a treatment for bird flu, which has caused widespread devastation in North American poultry farms, affecting over 54 million birds in just three months. Daniell’s team plans to add the antiviral protein to bird feed, potentially protecting both poultry and humans from the virus.

This innovation is both timely and practical. Unlike traditional vaccines and treatments, which can take months or even years to develop, simple, scalable, and affordable solutions like this gum offer an immediate and accessible defense.

Picture this: fighting pandemics one chew at a time.

Of course, more research and real-world clinical trials are needed, but the promise is undeniable. In a world weary from viral outbreaks—whether COVID, H5N1, or herpes—this bean-powered gum could be the unexpected hero we never saw coming.

Chew responsibly. The future of public health may just be minty-fresh.
