Islamabad: The demand for sunglasses has increased in the country, including Punjab, as citizens make an effort to protect themselves from a viral eye infection while still remaining fashionable, according to a report aired by a private news channel.

People suffering from conjunctivitis are strictly advised to follow good hygiene practices and to wear dark glasses to ease the symptoms they experience due to infection, said Senior Ophthalmologist.

According to a citizen, conjunctivitis patients wear dark glasses primarily to shield their eyes from light since, once infected, the condition makes the eyes more sensitive.

Most young people in Punjab City now adhere to a variety of cures to stop the development of conjunctivitis, a young person stated, adding that some individuals even wear dark shades, assuming that it will stop the disease.

It is common to see individuals with conjunctivitis wearing dark sunglasses, further said another citizen, adding that the sale of glasses is on the rise.

Senior Consultant Dr Yasir Zaib advised against purchasing spectacles from street vendors if they have pink eyes because these glasses are of poor quality, unclean and exceedingly hazardous to the eyes, increasing the risk of superinfection and severity of the illness.

Eye Specialist Dr Javed added that wearing sunglasses provides natural protection against the dust and particles in the environment, sheltering the already irritated and infected eye.

Sunglasses are available in a wide variety of colours, forms and price ranges. Regardless of how inexpensive they are, wearing a pair outside in the glaring sun can help prevent infections and minimise eyestrain, opined a young girl.

Sunglasses are an especially important aspect of lifelong ocular care, regardless of the patient’s refractive status, further added another Eye Specialist.
