CM Maryam Advocates for Reform at Kot Lakhpat Jail

Islamabad: Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, broke her fast alongside prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail on Sunday. 

During her visit, she inaugurated a video call facility for the inmates.

She also visited the cell where her father, Nawaz Sharif, had been incarcerated. Maryam Nawaz announced a reduction of 3 months in the sentences of prisoners across the province, leading to the release of 155 inmates.

Reflecting on her time spent in prison, Maryam Nawaz expressed empathy, recalling her own challenging experiences behind bars. 

She mentioned facing difficulties while being on death row.

Maryam Nawaz also shared her frustration over restrictions on visiting her father during his imprisonment, revealing that they were allowed to visit only once a week.

She recounted a moment when she found a handwritten letter from her father in jail, indicating his transfer to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

She described a particularly trying period when she heard about her father’s illness and his transfer to the hospital from someone in jail.

She lamented the inability to communicate directly with her mother, who was also a cancer patient in Adiala Jail, expressing that she could only speak to her children by glimpsing at the clock.

The Chief Minister emphasized the need for improvements in the justice system to prevent innocent individuals from being incarcerated. 

She stressed the importance of enhancing the prison system to make life easier for inmates.
