Islamabad: A two-day international conference on climate change is set to commence in the capital on Thursday, bringing together around 100 international experts to address Pakistan’s escalating environmental risks.
Organized under the ‘Breath Pakistan’ initiative by the Dawn Media Group in collaboration with the United Nations Pakistan, the conference aims to enhance awareness and drive collective action toward making Pakistan climate-resilient by 2047.
Focusing on regional cooperation, the event will facilitate discussions among key climate experts from South Asia to develop a strategic framework for mitigating the adverse effects of climate-induced disasters.
The conference will feature 14 sessions covering critical themes such as climate finance, climate justice, adaptation strategies, sustainable governance, and climate action.
Key discussions include the South Asian Symposium on Climate Change and the Pakistan Symposium on Governance & Climate Change, emphasizing the region’s vulnerability to global warming.
A special session, Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Pakistan in 2047: A Vision for Climate Resilience and Climate Justice, will envision a sustainable future for the country.
Additionally, the Roundtable Symposium on Igniting a Dialogue between Government & Corporate Sector on a New Blueprint for Climate Resilience in Pakistan will focus on forging public-private partnerships to tackle climate challenges effectively.
Other sessions will highlight the role of media, the empowerment of women in climate action, climate education for youth, and the resilience of agriculture and food systems in the face of climate change.
Pakistan remains one of the most vulnerable countries to climate disasters. According to the World Risk Index 2024, it is among the 15 nations facing the highest disaster risks. Official figures estimate that the catastrophic 2022 floods claimed 1,700 lives and impacted 33 million people, underscoring the urgency for climate action.
The conference is expected to provide a roadmap for sustainable and resilient climate policies, fostering collaboration between government, private sector, and civil society to tackle the country’s pressing environmental challenges.
