Lahore: Air pollution levels in Lahore have surged again, with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 398, making it the second most polluted city in the world.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the highest AQI was recorded in Cantt at a staggering 796, followed by Mall Road at 621 and Johar Town at 528.

Additionally, Shimla Pahari recorded an AQI of 493, while Defence Road stood at 492.

In response to the alarming pollution levels, the Punjab government has launched the Green Credit Programme (PGCP), a flagship initiative aimed at curtailing smog and air pollution in Lahore.

The PGCP is part of the Punjab Growth Strategy and aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Initially implemented in Lahore, the program will later expand to other parts of the province.

The initiative focuses on mobilizing youth, students, women, and the wider community to undertake environmentally positive actions across six key areas: Air, Water, Waste, Land, Biodiversity & Ecology, and Awareness.
