Chongqing: Stretching out his hands in a signature Donald Trump pose, Ryan Chen delivers the former US president’s voice and gestures with striking accuracy — a talent that has turned the 42-year-old Chinese performer into a social media sensation.
Hailing from southwest China’s Chongqing municipality, Chen has amassed millions of followers across Instagram, TikTok and several Chinese platforms through humorous videos that imitate Trump’s unmistakable mannerisms, without venturing into political satire — a sensitive area in China that can lead to account suspensions.
Speaking to AFP in his hometown, Chen described Trump as “an endless well” of online appeal. “He generates more internet traffic than anyone else on the planet,” he said.

Chen’s English-language videos, subtitled in Chinese, typically showcase Chinese cuisine, local customs, cultural differences and playful interactions with foreigners. He also dances to the Village People’s “YMCA,” one of Trump’s trademark rally songs, while peppering his performances with familiar buzzwords such as “tremendous” and “amazing.”
“I’m not into politics. I think he’s a very good entertainer,” Chen said, recalling that he began following Trump during his time as host of the reality television show The Apprentice.
Dressed in a white cowboy hat, Chen insisted his impersonations are not meant as mockery. “If I imitate him, it’s not to make fun of him — it’s to get attention,” he said. “And with that attention, I can build my career while promoting China and my hometown.”
