Beijing: China test-launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, as announced by the defense ministry, marking a rare disclosure amid rising military assertiveness.
According to a statement from the ministry, the Chinese military’s Rocket Force launched the ICBM carrying a dummy warhead at 08:44 local time on September 25. The missile successfully landed in designated sea areas.
The ministry characterized the test launch as a “routine arrangement” within its annual training plan, emphasizing that it aligns with international law and practices and is not directed against any specific country or target.
In October 2023, the US Defense Department reported that China was advancing its nuclear arsenal more rapidly than previously anticipated. As of May 2023, China was believed to have over 500 operational nuclear warheads, with projections indicating the stockpile could exceed 1,000 by 2030.
