China, Pakistan Join Hands to Boost Donkey Industry

Islamabad: The China-Pakistan Donkey Industry Development Forum opened in Islamabad on Thursday, bringing together hundreds of experts, scholars, entrepreneurs, and government officials from both countries to explore innovative pathways for livestock cooperation.

Themed “Creating Opportunities Together, Winning the Future Together,” the event was co-hosted by the China Chamber of Commerce in Pakistan and Sangyang Industrial (Beijing) Group Co., Ltd., with support from the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad and Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security and Research.

The forum highlighted the donkey industry’s potential as a specialized segment of livestock farming, with opportunities for standardization, branding, and industrialization. Speakers emphasized its role in meeting diverse market demands and contributing to agricultural modernization and rural development.

Prominent speakers included Pakistan’s National Food Security Secretary Amir Mohyuddin, China’s Chargé d’Affaires Shi Yuanqiang, Chairman of the China Chamber of Commerce in Pakistan Wang Huihua, and senior representatives from Chinese universities and agricultural associations.

Technical sessions focused on donkey genetic resource conservation, advanced breeding techniques, utilization of by-products, digital transformation, and branding strategies. Experts called for closer cooperation between the two countries in research, technology transfer, and sustainable farming practices.

To promote collaboration, several agreements were signed, including:

A Letter of Intention between the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and Sangyang Industrial (Beijing) Group Co., Ltd.

An MoU on establishing a China-Pakistan Joint Laboratory for Donkey Industry Innovation.

A strategic cooperation agreement between Shandong’s Ejiao Industry Association and Sangyang Global (Private) Limited.

China’s Embassy representative Shi Yuanqiang termed the donkey industry “a new entry point” for deepening China-Pakistan economic cooperation. He said the sector could inject “new vitality into agricultural modernization, rural revitalization, and industrial chain development.”

Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security also announced plans to regulate exports, curb illegal slaughter and smuggling, and ensure the industry’s development aligned with cultural and legal frameworks.

Sangyang Industrial CEO Wen Ming unveiled a contract farming model aimed at transforming Pakistan’s donkey industry into a sustainable, green sector with international competitiveness.

Experts from China Agricultural University stressed the importance of breeding optimization, nutritional standards, and smart management technologies to enhance productivity and reduce costs.

Participants agreed that the forum had provided a high-level platform for global industry exchange and cooperation, with the potential to boost rural incomes in Pakistan while meeting growing consumer demand in both countries.
