Beijing:China successfully launched the Shenzhou-22 spacecraft at 12:11 pm on Tuesday from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced.

The mission marks the first emergency launch in the history of China’s manned space program. The rapid launch followed an unexpected incident in which the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft was struck by space debris, disrupting its planned return journey.

In an unprecedented manoeuvre, the Shenzhou-20 crew safely returned to Earth using the docked Shenzhou-21 spacecraft, while ground teams fast-tracked preparations for Shenzhou-22.

A few minutes after liftoff, CMSA confirmed that Shenzhou-22 had successfully separated from its Long March carrier rocket and entered its designated orbit, declaring the launch a complete success, according to Global Times.

The spacecraft is carrying a full load of cargo, including food supplies for the taikonauts and essential equipment for the Chinese Space Station. The Shenzhou series can transport around 600 kilograms of material—sufficient to support the Shenzhou-21 crew and ensure their continued safety and mission continuity in orbit.

The arrival of Shenzhou-22 will also enable the Shenzhou-21 crew to safely withdraw as required while maintaining uninterrupted operations aboard the space station.
