Can US Expect a Smooth Handover if Trump is Defeated?

Islamabad: US President Joe Biden expressed concerns about the possibility of a peaceful transfer of power if Donald Trump loses in the upcoming election.

In a CBS interview extract aired on August 7, Biden, who dropped out of the presidential race in July, warned that he was “not confident at all” about a smooth transition to Kamala Harris, who has become the Democratic presidential nominee in his place.

Biden highlighted Trump’s campaign trail comments about not accepting defeat, suggesting that these should be taken seriously. He remarked, “He means what he says. We don’t take him seriously. He means it — all the stuff about ‘if we lose there’ll be a bloodbath.'”

Biden often referenced the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, which occurred after he defeated Trump in the 2020 election, as a sign of Trump’s influence on his supporters.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the 2020 election was stolen, although this claim has been widely discredited. Biden accused Trump of attempting to place allies in key electoral positions to potentially manipulate election results.

“You can’t love your country only when you win,” Biden said, emphasizing the need for a democratic process to be respected regardless of the outcome.

Harris, while echoing Biden’s concerns about Trump, has focused more on presenting a positive campaign vision, which has energized Democrats and helped her lead in opinion polls against Trump.
