Chennai: Jasprit Bumrah, India’s pace spearhead, claimed four wickets as India bowled out Bangladesh for 149, securing a commanding 227-run lead on day two of the first Test in Chennai on Friday.

Bangladesh crumbled in the final session, with former skipper Shakib Al Hasan top-scoring with 32 in response to India’s first-innings total of 376. The Indian team chose not to enforce the follow-on and will bat again in their second innings.

Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin powered India with a remarkable 113, contributing to a 199-run seventh-wicket stand alongside Ravindra Jadeja. India’s bowlers came out aggressive, reducing Bangladesh to 40-5 in the second session after Akash Deep struck twice in quick succession before lunch.

Bumrah was the first to break through, dismissing Shadman Islam for two. Akash Deep followed up with back-to-back wickets, clean bowling Zakir Hasan (3) and Mominul Haque (0). Despite Mushfiqur Rahim surviving a hat-trick ball, he managed only eight runs before falling to Bumrah.

Shakib and Litton Das (22) offered some resistance, putting on a 51-run stand, but Jadeja’s left-arm spin soon accounted for both. Bumrah, with his bouncers and yorkers, and Mohammed Siraj wrapped up the innings, leaving Mehidy Hasan Miraz unbeaten on 27.

On day one, Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was impressive, taking 5-83, but India bounced back with Ashwin and Jadeja’s stand. Akash Deep added a quickfire 17, but India’s innings was closed out by Taskin Ahmed and Hasan, who claimed his second five-wicket haul in just his fourth Test.

India aims to strengthen their position at the top of the World Test Championship rankings as they embark on a new Test season of 10 matches. Bangladesh is still seeking their first Test victory against India.

Revised Scorecard:

India 376 all out (Ravichandran Ashwin 113, Ravindra Jadeja 86; Hasan Mahmud 5-83)

Bangladesh 149 all out (Shakib Al Hasan 32; Jasprit Bumrah 4-39, Akash Deep 2-26).
