Buddhist Monks’ “Walk for Peace” Concludes in Washington

Washington: A 15-week “Walk for Peace” undertaken by a group of Buddhist monks is set to conclude on Wednesday at the Lincoln Memorial, marking the end of a journey that began in Texas late last year and carried a message of peace across several US states.
The monks were greeted by large and enthusiastic crowds as they entered Washington, DC on Tuesday, walking through Capitol Hill ahead of the closing ceremony planned at the Lincoln Memorial.
The interfaith trek began in late October in Texas, with the monks walking through Houston, Richmond and several parts of Virginia before reaching the US capital. Along the way, they drew support from communities who gathered to welcome them and express solidarity with their message.
Dressed in traditional saffron and maroon robes, the monks also took part in an interfaith gathering at the Washington National Cathedral, where they were joined by religious leaders from other faiths, including Washington Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde.

Speaking at the event, the group’s leader, Bhikku Pannakara, described the experience as deeply moving. “It is overwhelming for us. These are the moments I will remember for the rest of my life,” he said, addressing Bishop Budde and participants.
Supporters lined the monks’ route holding placards reading “Blessed are the peacemakers,” while about 3,500 people gathered at American University’s Bender Arena during the monks’ first stop in Washington.
The religious leaders stressed that the walk was not a political campaign but a spiritual initiative aimed at promoting peace through personal conduct and mindfulness.
A spokesperson for the Fort Worth temple, Long Si Dong, said the journey was intended as “an invitation to live peace through everyday actions, mindful steps and open hearts.”
The closing ceremony on Wednesday is expected to draw participants from diverse faith communities, marking the culmination of a journey that has united supporters across the country around a shared call for peace.
