London: Downing Street announced on Wednesday that Universal has agreed to a multi-billion-pound investment to build a new Universal theme park and resort in the town of Bedford, near London.

The attraction, expected to open in 2031, will mark Universal’s first theme park in Europe.

According to Downing Street, the project will:

Create nearly 20,000 jobs during the construction phase.

Generate an additional 8,000 jobs across the hospitality and creative industries once the park is operational.

Universal projects that the site will contribute nearly 50 billion pounds (approximately 64 billion US dollars) to the British economy by 2055. The park is expected to draw 8.5 million visitors in its first year, making it the largest visitor attraction in Britain.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed the project as a demonstration of “Britain’s Plan for Change in action,” highlighting its role in delivering real opportunities for citizens and supporting a strong, competitive economy.

Mark Woodbury, chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, said the move aligns with Universal’s broader strategy to expand its brand and experiences to new global audiences.

The theme park will feature Universal’s signature attractions and entertainment offerings. Initial resort plans include:

A 500-room hotel

Multiple retail, dining, and entertainment venues

The project is widely seen as a major boost for Britain’s tourism and entertainment sectors.
