Bridgerton, Handmaid’s Stars Shine in Thriller Anniversary Release
News Desk
Islamabad: If you’re a fan of Bridgerton or The Handmaid’s Tale, you’ll want to keep your eye on Anniversary a new thriller featuring familiar faces in a dramatic new setting. The film stars Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor and The Handmaid’s Tale’s Madeline Brewer, along with Mckenna Grace and Diane Lane.
Lane, known for her iconic role in The Outsiders and more recently as the voice of Riley’s mom in Inside Out, plays a central role in this unsettling story of family, secrets, and growing societal tensions.
In Anniversary, Dynevor plays Liz, a seemingly happy young woman visiting her boyfriend Josh’s (Dylan O’Brien) family for their anniversary celebration. But things take a dark turn when Josh’s mother, Ellen (Lane), recognizes Liz as one of her former students. As a nationwide movement called “The Change” grows in influence, buried tensions within the family begin to surface.
Directed and co-written by Jan Komasa, the film also features Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch, and Daryl McCormack. It’s slated for a theatrical release on October 29, 2025—just in time to compete with a crowded awards season full of buzzworthy festival debuts.
A Closer Look at the Trailer and Awards Season Prospects
While the trailer hints at a gripping, emotionally charged drama that tackles how political and personal divides can rip through families, Anniversary faces a tough challenge at the box office. Its fall release date puts it in direct competition with higher-profile films, and it may ultimately find a more receptive audience on streaming platforms.
That said, the film could be a significant stepping stone for its stars. Diane Lane, fresh off roles in Feud and the DCEU, is well-suited to anchor a story steeped in tension and family drama. Dynevor continues to carve out her post-Bridgerton career, and Brewer steps into the spotlight after concluding her work on The Handmaid’s Tale.
Mckenna Grace, meanwhile, shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to Anniversary, she stars in Regretting You based on Colleen Hoover’s novel releasing this fall, and will return to the big screen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping next year.
Context Within a Growing Trend
The film arrives amid a noticeable trend in pop culture: stories centered on suspicion and family mistrust. For instance, Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming series The Girlfriend, premiering next month, tells a similarly intense story about a young man who brings home a girlfriend his family doesn’t trust focusing on the fraught relationship between the young woman and the mother.
The show stars Olivia Cooke, Paul Mescal, and Robin Wright, and is poised for stronger streaming success thanks to its high-profile cast and clearer narrative approach.
While Anniversary introduces thought-provoking themes, its trailer leaves some questions about the clarity of its storytelling. Nonetheless, the premise and cast suggest it could be worth watching especially to see how these familiar actors navigate new emotional terrain.
