Biden Supporter Calls for President to Exit 2024 Race
News Desk:
New York: Hollywood superstar and lifelong Democrat George Clooney called for US President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race on Wednesday, just weeks after hosting a record-breaking fundraiser for Biden’s reelection campaign.
In a New York Times opinion piece, Clooney expressed his admiration for Biden but warned that the Democratic Party risked losing the presidential race and control of Congress with him as the nominee.
“This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and congress member and governor that I’ve spoken with in private,” Clooney wrote.
Clooney urged the party to select a new nominee at its convention next month, acknowledging that the process would be “messy” but could “wake up” voters in the party’s favor.
He suggested Vice President Kamala Harris, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and California Governor Gavin Newsom as potential candidates.
Highlighting Biden’s age, Clooney noted differences in the 81-year-old president during their recent Los Angeles event compared to previous years.
“It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe Biden of 2010,” Clooney wrote. “He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”
