Islamabad: Health experts have emphasized the crucial role of public awareness in promoting lifestyle changes to combat obesity and diabetes, as the trend of bariatric surgery—also known as metabolic surgery—gains momentum worldwide for its effectiveness in sustainable weight loss and related health benefits.
Renowned Consultant General and Bariatric Surgeon, Professor Dr Maaz ul Hasan, highlighted the alarming rise in obesity and diabetes in an exclusive interview with a state-run news channel.
He discussed innovative medical interventions for effective weight management, stressing that surgery is no longer a last resort but a viable option for those struggling with severe weight-related issues and diabetes.
“Surgery is no longer the final option but a practical solution for individuals facing chronic obesity and diabetes,” Dr Maaz emphasized. However, he strongly advised that people should first focus on lifestyle modifications and dietary control before considering surgical interventions.
He issued a stark warning that if healthier lifestyles are not adopted, by 2045, every child could be at risk of developing diabetes, underscoring the urgent need for collective efforts to prevent an impending health crisis.
“Lifestyle modification is the first line of defense against obesity and diabetes,” he stressed.
In addition to surgical interventions, Dr Maaz noted that medications such as Ozempic and other injectable treatments can play a crucial role in managing diabetes and obesity, offering a comprehensive approach to treatment.
Explaining the bariatric surgery process, he walked the audience through various procedures, detailing their benefits and expected outcomes while dispelling common misconceptions surrounding the surgery.
He also observed a growing global trend of individuals opting for bariatric surgery, not just in Pakistan but worldwide, as people seek effective solutions for obesity and related health concerns.
Health professionals continue to advocate for a balanced approach, where lifestyle changes remain the primary focus, complemented by medical and surgical interventions when necessary.
