Dhaka: The Bangladeshi government has deployed the army to control escalating civil unrest triggered by student protests. Riot police have fired on demonstrators defying a government-imposed curfew, resulting in at least 123 deaths.
Protesters have been demanding an end to a quota system that they believe benefits government loyalists. The unrest has grown beyond student issues, with calls for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
The government has also imposed a nationwide internet shutdown, affecting communication and media updates.
Pierre Prakash of Crisis Group and Babu Ram Pant of Amnesty International have condemned the government’s response, highlighting the severe impact of the crackdown on civil liberties.
