Backup Tips as Snapchat Cuts Free Storage

News Desk

Global: Snapchat, the popular social media platform with over 450 million daily users, has announced a significant change to its Memories feature, limiting free storage to just 5GB.

Users exceeding this cap will either need to subscribe to paid plans or risk losing their most recent Snaps.

To accommodate those requiring additional storage, Snapchat has introduced several paid options:

100GB for $1.99 per month

250GB for $3.99 per month (Snapchat+ subscribers)

5TB for $15.99 per month (Snapchat Platinum members)

Users who do not upgrade will have newer Snaps automatically deleted, while older Memories remain accessible until total storage falls below the 5GB limit. Snapchat is offering a 12-month grace period to allow users time to back up or delete data before the policy is strictly enforced.

How Users Can Backup Memories

Many users are transferring their Memories directly to their phone’s camera roll — a manual but reliable way to preserve Snaps. Steps include:

Open Snapchat and tap the Memories icon.

Select up to 100 Memories (maximum per batch).

Tap Export → Download.

Repeat until all desired Snaps are saved.

For users with large archives, Snapchat also offers a faster method through the “Download My Data” tool, which sends a complete backup via email in a .zip file. To use this feature:

Go to Profile → Settings.

Select My Data.

Check Memories and choose both HTML and JSON formats.

Select All Time as the export range.

Confirm your email and submit.

The backup delivery time depends on the archive size, but this method ensures users have a complete offline copy of their Memories outside the app.

This change reflects Snapchat’s growing focus on monetization while urging users to proactively manage and safeguard their digital memories.
