Islamabad: Australia secured a spot in the ICC U-19 World Cup final by narrowly defeating Pakistan by one wicket in a tense second semi-final.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss in the Benoni semi-final, Australia’s decision proved effective.
With the loss of 4 wickets for 53 runs, Pakistan faced a challenging situation when Haroon Arshad was dismissed, and half of the team was back in the pavilion with a score of 79 runs. Arafat Minhas joined Azaan Owais, and together they not only scored half-centuries but also built a partnership of 54 runs during this crucial stage.
Azan Owais and Arafat contributed with innings of 52 and 52 runs, respectively, but the entire team was dismissed for 179 runs in the 49th over. Tom Straker showcased an impressive bowling performance, taking six wickets for Australia.
In their pursuit of the target, the Australian team also faced a setback, losing 4 wickets for 59 runs. However, Harry Dixon and Oliver Peck formed a valuable partnership, adding 43 runs for the fifth wicket and bringing their team back into contention.
Despite the promising partnership, Arafat Minhas bowled Harry Dixon, who had scored 50 runs.
Tom Campbell and Oliver added another 44 runs for the sixth wicket, but the contest became intriguing as Ali Raza and Arafat took consecutive wickets during this stage.
With 17 runs required for victory and the ninth wicket falling, Australia’s tailender displayed remarkable resilience, guiding the team to a triumphant one-wicket win.
Ali Raza performed admirably for Pakistan, taking four wickets, while Arafat contributed with two wickets. This victory secured Australia’s place in the final, where they are set to face India.
