Cairo/Gaza: Egypt has welcomed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent announcement that the United Kingdom intends to formally recognize the State of Palestine, calling the move a pivotal step toward peace in the Middle East.

In a statement released via the Middle East News Agency (MENA), Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration described the UK’s decision as part of growing international momentum in support of Palestinian statehood based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital.

Egypt reiterated its longstanding commitment to the two-state solution and urged countries that have not yet recognized Palestine to follow the example set by the UK and France. The ministry emphasized that broader recognition would be a critical step toward achieving a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and ensuring regional stability.

Dozens Killed Amid Aid Distribution

Meanwhile, humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate amid ongoing Israeli military operations. Medical sources reported that at least 35 Palestinian civilians were killed and dozens more injured by Israeli gunfire near aid distribution centers across multiple areas of the Gaza Strip.

The violence further compounds the humanitarian crisis, with food insecurity and displacement affecting hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

Press Syndicate Raises Alarm

In a separate statement, the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate reported that the number of journalists killed in Gaza has risen to 232 since the Israeli military campaign began on October 7, 2023.

The syndicate condemned the targeting of media professionals and called on the international community to take urgent action to protect journalists and ensure accountability for those responsible for these attacks.

It emphasized that press freedom and the safety of journalists must be upheld, particularly in conflict zones where accurate information is essential for the global community.
