Islamabad: Apple is reportedly working on a powerful AI-driven search engine internally dubbed the “Apple Answer Engine”, signaling a major shift in its artificial intelligence strategy and a potential challenge to leading AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has assembled a dedicated internal team—Answers, Knowledge, and Information (AKI)—tasked with building this next-generation search system. The goal is to provide real-time, web-based answers to user queries, mirroring the functionality currently offered by generative AI platforms.

Going Beyond Siri and ChatGPT Integration

Earlier this year, Apple announced the integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Siri and its new “Apple Intelligence” features as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15, expected to launch later this year. However, the tech giant now appears to be moving toward greater independence in the AI space with its own native tool.

The Apple Answer Engine is expected to be deeply integrated into Apple’s ecosystem, including Siri, Spotlight, Safari, and possibly as a standalone app. The aim is to deliver highly personalized, privacy-focused responses—consistent with Apple’s long-standing commitment to user data protection.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has referred to artificial intelligence as a transformational force, reportedly telling employees:

Though late to the generative AI race compared to competitors like Google and OpenAI, Apple is betting on tight hardware-software integration, a privacy-first approach, and native AI experiences to stand out in a crowded market.
