Anti-Corruption Day Echoes Importance in Development, Peace

Islamabad: On International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD), we highlight the crucial link between combating corruption and its impact on peace, security, and development.

This day serves as a reminder to raise awareness about the consequences of corruption and promote ethical choices. In 2003, the United Nations took a significant step by adopting the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

This treaty signifies global collaboration among UN member states to combat corruption and uphold principles of law and order. Signed on December 9 and effective from December 14, the UNCAC stands as a milestone in the fight against corruption. Corruption’s pervasive nature affects all nations, significantly impacting vulnerable groups, including women.

It erodes democratic institutions, undermines confidence in governance, and poses a threat to achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, corruption contributes to conflicts, disrupts peace processes, and fuels armed conflicts by undermining the rule of law, exacerbating poverty, and enabling illicit resource exploitation.
