Another Powerful Earthquake Strikes Russia’s Kuril Islands
News Desk
Moscow: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck Russia’s far eastern Kuril Islands on Sunday, marking the second major seismic event in the region within a week and triggering temporary tsunami warnings.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake was initially recorded at 6.3 magnitude before being revised to 7.0. The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) later confirmed the 7.0 magnitude reading.
Although the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that there was no tsunami threat following the quake, Russian authorities briefly issued precautionary tsunami warnings for three districts in the Kamchatka region. No casualties or significant damage had been reported at the time of filing this report.
The Kuril Islands — a volcanic archipelago stretching from Japan’s Hokkaido to Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula — are located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
Second Major Quake in Less Than a Week
Sunday’s quake comes just days after a massive 8.0-magnitude earthquake rattled the Kamchatka coast late Wednesday. That event, one of the most powerful in recent regional history, prompted widespread tsunami advisories across the Pacific, including the US West Coast, Japan, and the Hawaiian Islands.
The USGS said the earlier quake struck about 136 kilometres from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of Kamchatka Krai, at a depth of 19 kilometres. Emergency warnings were issued, and residents on Sakhalin Island were evacuated to higher ground as a precaution. Governor Valery Limarenko confirmed that no casualties were reported.
Ongoing Seismic Risk in the Ring of Fire
Seismologists noted that the occurrence of two strong earthquakes within such a short span is not unusual for the Pacific Ring of Fire. “This area is among the most active zones of tectonic movement, and such events, while alarming, are part of ongoing geological processes,” a Russian geophysicist told local media.
Though no tsunami materialized from the latest tremor, authorities warned of possible aftershocks or further seismic events in the coming days. Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry has dispatched assessment teams to remote villages in the Kurils to evaluate potential damage and disruption to infrastructure.
Strategic and Geological Significance
The Kuril Islands sit at the tectonic boundary where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Okhotsk Plate, making them highly prone to earthquakes. Despite being sparsely populated, the region is of strategic military and geopolitical importance to Russia.
The recent spike in seismic activity has reignited discussions around regional preparedness, including the need to strengthen early warning systems and enhance public education on emergency protocols.
