Mehar/Dadu: A suspected outbreak of a dangerous throat virus in Mehar, an area of interior Sindh, has claimed another young life, intensifying concerns over delayed referrals and gaps in healthcare response in the region.
12-year-old Asif Ali Jiskani died after battling the infection for several days, becoming the latest victim in what residents describe as a growing health crisis.
According to his family as reported on Dunya News website, Asif first developed symptoms of a severe throat infection and was admitted to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Dadu, where he remained under treatment for several days without improvement.

As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Larkana. However, the family alleged that adequate medical care was not provided there either, prompting another referral to Karachi for advanced treatment. The child died en route to the provincial capital.
Health officials have yet to issue a detailed explanation regarding the cause of the infections or the treatment protocols being followed, while local residents say the repeated deaths highlight the absence of specialised care facilities in interior districts.
With Asif’s death, the number of children who have reportedly died from the throat virus in Mehar has risen to at least eight, sparking renewed calls for urgent intervention by provincial health authorities.
Residents and families affected by the outbreak are demanding immediate screening, specialised medical teams and improved referral mechanisms to prevent further loss of life, as fears continue to mount over the spread of the infection.
