Islamabad: In a thrilling encounter at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Club América, the reigning Liga MX champions, secured a remarkable 3-2 victory over La Liga title-holders Barcelona in a friendly match.

Barcelona arrived in Dallas straight from a 3-2 triumph over Almeria in Spain, fielding an alternate lineup predominantly comprising six teenagers, three of whom were making their debuts.

The Spanish giants took an early lead as 16-year-old Lamine Yamal made a stunning run from midfield to beat América’s goalkeeper Angel Malagon and put Barcelona ahead 1-0.

However, Club América swiftly responded, with Colombian-born Mexican international Julian Quiñones netting an equalizer in the 12th minute, skillfully backheeling the ball into the net after receiving a pass from United States midfielder Alejandro Zendejas.

Despite Barcelona taking a 2-1 lead with a goal from 17-year-old Marc Guiu in the 28th minute, Club América leveled the score once more shortly after halftime, as Quiñones capitalized on a defensive duel to make it 2-2.

The match saw numerous substitutions from both sides, but it was América who ultimately clinched the win, with striker Henry Martín scoring in the 82nd minute, securing victory despite a late push from Barcelona.

Club América, fresh off their record-extending 14th Liga MX title after defeating Tigres 4-1 on aggregate in the final, looks forward to the upcoming 2024 Clausura season, commencing in January.

Meanwhile, Barcelona, as indicated by manager Xavi, participated in the friendly to support the club financially and will resume La Liga action in January. Reports suggest Barcelona received €5 million for their involvement in the match.
