Air India Flight Skids Off Runway in Mumbai
News Desk
Islamabad: An Air India flight from Cochin to Mumbai veered off the runway on Sunday morning amid heavy rainfall. Flight AI 2744 landed at 9:40 a.m. but skidded off Runway 27, leading to an immediate suspension of operations on the affected runway for safety checks.
Airport authorities temporarily closed Runway 27 to inspect for possible damage and to ensure safe conditions before resuming operations. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and all passengers were safely evacuated.
The incident occurred as Mumbai continues to experience intense monsoon rains, which have significantly reduced visibility and affected runway conditions. Authorities have urged airlines to exercise extra caution while operating in such adverse weather.
This follows previous runway incidents in India, including the tragic crash of an Air India Express flight in Kozhikode in August 2020 during heavy rain, which resulted in 21 fatalities. More recently, in November 2023, a chartered aircraft carrying medical supplies crash-landed at Ahmedabad airport due to a hydraulic failure. While the plane suffered major damage, there were no casualties.
