AI Tag Glitch Disrupts Instagram Contact Lists, Meta Remains Silent

Islamabad: A strange and widespread glitch on Instagram over the weekend has left users scratching their heads—and their contact lists in disarray—as every friend on the platform was suddenly renamed “AI.”

First surfacing on Reddit, the bug rapidly gained global attention as users discovered that their contacts were no longer identifiable by name. Instead, each friend appeared under a generic “AI” label, leaving profile pictures as the only clue to their true identity. The issue made simple tasks—like messaging or sharing videos—unusually difficult and sparked a wave of online frustration.

“I can’t find any of my friends. They’re all just called AI. This is ridiculous,” one Reddit user, posting under the handle “9yearold911,” wrote alongside a screenshot. Another user likened the experience to a digital regression: “It feels like going back to the Stone Age.”

Adding to the confusion was a cryptic in-app message some users encountered during the glitch: “AI chats are not yet available to everyone.” The timing led many to speculate that Instagram’s parent company, Meta, may have inadvertently triggered the problem during a behind-the-scenes rollout of new AI features.

So far, Meta has remained tight-lipped. As of Saturday morning, the tech giant had neither confirmed the cause of the glitch nor provided an official fix or explanation. Whether it was a failed update, an internal test gone awry, or the accidental launch of experimental AI tools, remains unknown.

This incident is the latest in a string of controversies surrounding AI integration on the platform. Just last month, users reported being wrongfully banned for using automation tools, raising concerns about the reliability of AI-driven moderation systems. Critics say that Meta’s growing reliance on artificial intelligence especially when deployed with minimal transparency has fueled unease among its users.

Ethan Zhao, a Palo Alto-based software engineer, says the glitch is indicative of a broader issue. “There’s a growing trust deficit when companies roll out AI tools without proper communication,” he said. “When those systems malfunction, users feel blindsided and helpless.”

The chaos has reignited calls from digital rights advocates urging Meta to slow down and improve how it communicates and tests AI features before pushing them live.

While some users report that their contact lists have returned to normal, others continue to face disruptions. For now, confusion persists, and the question remains: what exactly went wrong—and what comes next?

As millions continue to rely on Instagram for daily communication and content sharing, the bug has become more than a temporary annoyance it’s a cautionary tale of what happens when AI experiments escape the lab and land directly in users’ pockets.
