AI Course Made Mandatory in All Pakistani Universities

Lahore: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is taking major steps to modernize Pakistan’s universities and equip students for the demands of the digital economy.
HEC Chairman Professor Niaz Ahmed Akhtar announced on Friday that a three-credit hour course in Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be mandatory for all undergraduate programs across the country.
The move is part of a broader agenda to align higher education with global trends and national priorities.
Professor Akhtar said the HEC is pushing comprehensive reforms, including curriculum improvements, academic assessments, and a more transparent examination system under the newly established Outcome Based Education Committee.
To strengthen the link between academia and industry, a special committee has been tasked with enhancing Research, Innovation, and Commercialization Offices, promoting applied research, entrepreneurship, and the commercialization of university projects into real-world solutions.

Other initiatives include fully online degree verification, improving global university rankings through a dedicated ranking committee, and standardizing undergraduate admissions to ensure high-quality graduates.
Provincial-level committees, involving vice-chancellors and higher education departments, are also being formed to oversee reforms at the local level.
Professor Akhtar highlighted progress on the government’s laptop distribution scheme, with 65,000 laptops already provided to students, aiming to facilitate digital learning nationwide.
“These steps are designed not just to modernize education, but to ensure that Pakistani graduates are competitive in the fast-evolving global digital economy,” the HEC Chairman said.
