Lahore: Pakistan’s newly appointed T20I captain, Salman Ali Agha, has vowed to lead the team with an aggressive yet calculated approach, promising a brand of cricket that is “fearless but not careless.”

Speaking at a pre-series press conference at Gaddafi Stadium ahead of the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, Salman laid out his vision for a modern, attacking Pakistan side ready to take on the challenges ahead.

“It is a luxury to have so many aggressive players in the squad,” Salman said confidently, highlighting the team’s depth and attacking potential. He pointed to explosive batsman Hasan Nawaz, who will be given a crucial role in the middle order after proving his mettle in that position.

“No international team is an easy opponent,” he acknowledged. “We will strive to play quality cricket and aim to overcome Bangladesh in this series.”

On the subject of team selection, Salman explained the absence of spinner Sufyan Muqeem in the current squad. “The pitch at Gaddafi Stadium doesn’t favor spinners much, which influenced the decision not to include Sufyan this time,” he said. “However, Sufyan is definitely in the plans for Pakistan’s future white-ball cricket.”

The captain also praised Bangladesh’s fast bowling attack, calling it the best trio in recent times. “Bangladesh is a quality side and their fast bowlers have been impressive. But we have our own plans to counter them,” Salman added.

Acknowledging the significance of established stars in the team, Salman paid tribute to Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi for their consistent match-winning performances. “These players have brought great glory to Pakistan, but we also have a crop of young cricketers ready to step in and perform at any position,” he noted.

Salman highlighted the ongoing team restructuring as a strategic move to build a strong pool of 20-25 players in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in Sri Lanka. “These changes allow us to have ready replacements in case of injuries and form a balanced, competitive team for the future,” he said.

Reflecting on the selection process, Salman explained that performances in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL) season X played a significant role, though international form was equally considered. “Most players in the current squad have proven themselves on the international stage,” he confirmed.

When asked about the influence of the captain and head coach in team selection, Salman stated, “Both the captain and head coach have a say in the playing eleven. During our New Zealand tour, the team management valued my input on selections.”

The captain assured that most players would get a chance to prove themselves in this series and future assignments. He also confirmed that Hasan Nawaz would continue to feature in the middle order, where he has shown promising skill and composure.

Addressing concerns about quick bowler Mohammad Wasim, Salman admitted that the player was selected despite carrying a minor injury from PSL X. “Our physios are closely monitoring his rehabilitation. No final decision has been made on his participation in the playing eleven,” he said.

Salman Ali Agha’s leadership marks a new chapter for Pakistan’s T20I cricket, blending youthful exuberance with strategic experience as the team gears up for a challenging season and the long road to the 2026 World Cup.
