Agha Siraj Durrani: A Lifetime Dedicated to Sindh Politics

Karachi: Agha Siraj Durrani, former speaker of the Sindh Assembly and a senior leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), passed away in Karachi at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness.

Durrani had been receiving treatment at a private hospital for several weeks, with his condition worsening over time. 

Family sources said he was shifted to Karachi about a month ago due to critical health issues, including kidney disease. Despite intensive medical care, he breathed his last today.

A Life Dedicated to Public Service

Born on October 5, 1953, in Shikarpur, Durrani received his early education at St. Patrick’s High School in Karachi before earning an LLB from Sindh Muslim Government Law College. 

His educational foundation paved the way for a long and distinguished political and legal career.

Over decades, Durrani emerged as one of the senior-most figures in Sindh politics, holding key positions within the PPP and serving as the speaker of the Sindh Assembly. 

He also held the portfolio of provincial minister for local government and was widely respected for his contributions to strengthening democratic institutions in the province.

Tributes from Colleagues

Leaders across the country mourned his passing. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow, paying tribute to Durrani’s extensive contributions to Sindh’s political and social development.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted his invaluable services as Sindh Assembly speaker, while Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan remembered him as a towering figure in Sindh politics, extending heartfelt condolences to his family.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah described Durrani as a sincere, loyal, and principled leader whose dedication to public service was exemplary. 

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab also mourned the loss, calling him a dignified and principled political leader.

Agha Siraj Durrani’s political journey was marked by unwavering commitment to the public and his party. Known for his strategic insight and dedication, he played a crucial role in shaping Sindh’s legislative and democratic framework. 

His contributions to politics and public welfare have left a lasting imprint on the province.

As Sindh and the nation bid farewell to one of its respected leaders, tributes continue to pour in, honoring a life devoted to service, governance, and democracy.

Durrani is survived by his family, who continue to receive condolences from across Pakistan.
