Islamabad: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has paid a heartfelt tribute to Indian batting legend Virat Kohli following his retirement from Test cricket, commending his immense contribution to the longest format of the game.
Taking to Instagram, Afridi wrote:
“Congratulations on a remarkable career @imVkohli. Your passion, intensity and professionalism set new standards in Test cricket. The purist format will miss your presence and competitive spirit.”
Kohli, 36, announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this week, ending a stellar red-ball career that began in 2011. Over 123 Test matches, the Indian batter amassed 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. He confirmed his decision through an Instagram post, calling Test cricket the format that “tested and shaped” him.
“It’s not easy — but it feels right,” Kohli wrote. “There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever.”
Kohli’s final Test appearance came against Australia in January, drawing the curtain on a glittering career. Beyond his batting achievements, he also leaves behind a remarkable legacy as India’s most successful Test captain. Under his leadership, India played 68 Tests, winning 40, losing 17, and reaching the finals of both the 2021 and 2023 ICC World Test Championships.
India’s next Test assignment is a five-match home series against England, beginning on June 20.
