Islamabad: Pakistan’s star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi will return home early from the KFC Big Bash League after sustaining a knee injury while playing for the Brisbane Heat, the club confirmed on Monday.
Afridi suffered a knee cartilage injury during Brisbane Heat’s thrilling final-over victory against the Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba on Saturday night.
Following immediate medical assessments and consultations with both the Heat’s medical staff and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), it was mutually decided that Afridi would cut short his BBL campaign to focus on recovery ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup.
Speaking to teammates before his departure, Afridi expressed disappointment at leaving early but praised his time in Brisbane. “I thoroughly enjoyed playing for the Heat. The team environment was fantastic, and the fans’ support meant a lot. I hope to return in the future,” he said.
Brisbane Heat CEO Terry Svenson lauded Afridi’s professionalism and influence on the squad, particularly his mentorship of younger bowlers. “Despite a shortened stint, Shaheen made a significant impact both on and off the field. His advice and insights have been invaluable, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Svenson said.
Acting Heat captain Xavier Bartlett echoed the praise, highlighting Afridi’s contribution to team discussions and match strategies. “He’s been an excellent teammate, integrating seamlessly into the squad and leaving a positive impression on everyone,” Bartlett said.
With Afridi’s early exit, the Brisbane Heat are now exploring replacement options for the remainder of the BBL season. Meanwhile, the pacer’s priority will be regaining full fitness, with the T20 World Cup firmly in sight.
Afridi’s brief but impactful BBL tenure showcased not only his skill but also his dedication and leadership, reinforcing his status as one of Pakistan cricket’s premier fast bowlers.
