Activists Demand Immediate Restoration of Twitter Access

News Desk
Islamabad: In a joint statement, human rights activists and civil society organizations expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of internet shutdowns and the blocking of social media platforms, calling for the immediate reinstatement of X (Twitter).
According to a press release issued on Wednesday, they said more than a month has passed since the nationwide outage of access to the social media platform X in Pakistan, yet X remains inaccessible to millions of users.
The internet was completely shut down on the day of the general elections in the country on February 8, with the public facing intermittent outages despite court orders to restore the social media platform.
Human rights activists and civil society organizations launched a campaign for X’s rehabilitation using the hashtag Open Internet on social media to draw the government’s attention to the issue.
The joint statement also criticized the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for its continued silence and failure to provide any reason for such actions.
“Such measures not only silence various political voices but also increase the risk of spreading misinformation,” the statement emphasized.
Civil society called for immediate action to roll back digital censorship in Pakistan.
