Abhishek Sharma’s T20 blitz built on preparation, not brute force

Islamabad: Abhishek Sharma’s explosive innings in the first T20I against New Zealand was less about raw power and more about meticulous preparation, the India opener revealed after powering the hosts to a 48-run win.

Striking at 240 after facing 35 balls, Abhishek tore into the new ball with eight sixes and brought up a 22-ball fifty, continuing a run that has made him the most prolific six-hitter among Full-Member teams in T20Is since the 2024 World Cup.

While the numbers suggested high-risk aggression, Abhishek framed his approach as calculated and repeatable. With limited time to assess conditions as an opener, he said advance homework — studying bowlers’ videos and revisiting his own batting clips — allows him to commit fully once at the crease.

“I don’t have a lot of shots,” Abhishek said, explaining that clarity over what he will play matters more than expanding his range. “It’s about backing those few options and executing them.”

That clarity showed even after the powerplay, when Abhishek continued attacking established spinners and quicks alike rather than easing off.

Despite his reputation as a six-hitter — 81 sixes in 33 T20I innings — he insisted his game is rooted in timing, not strength.

Adapting quickly to conditions across venues, he plans sessions around likely bowling plans and focuses on winning the early overs against frontline bowlers.

For Abhishek, the payoff isn’t just personal milestones, but seizing momentum early — a formula India hope will keep delivering as teams increasingly bowl with specific plans to stop him.
