Islamabad: The Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Water Financing Partnership Facility has catalyzed nearly $10 billion in water sector investments, benefiting around 123 million people across 20 developing member countries (DMCs) as of December 2022.
The ADB trust fund has specifically leveraged over $1.64 billion in investments for citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) projects, enhancing access to safe and sustainable sanitation services in the region.
In a significant boost, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation contributed $8 million in replenishment to the ADB Sanitation Financing Partnership Trust Fund, raising its total contribution to $27 million since 2013. This funding aims to expand collaborative efforts to improve sanitation access in Asia and the Pacific.
Norio Saito, Senior Director of ADB’s Water and Urban Development Sector Office, said the renewed contribution “magnifies the impact of our initiatives to provide affordable, safe, inclusive, and climate-resilient sanitation services.”
The trust fund, established in 2013, promotes investments in fecal sludge management, creating markets, regulatory frameworks, and innovative business models for non-piped sanitation and septage management. It also seeks to accelerate the adoption of the CWIS approach, ensuring equitable and inclusive sanitation solutions.
Since its inception, the trust fund has improved sanitation for 13.93 million people, with around $410 million of leveraged CWIS investments directed specifically toward non-sewered sanitation and fecal sludge management projects.
The initiative forms a key part of the ADB Water Financing Partnership Facility, which mobilizes financial and knowledge resources from development partners to support sustainable water and sanitation operations across the region.
This partnership underscores ADB’s commitment to strengthening climate resilience in sanitation infrastructure while expanding access to safe and inclusive services for millions of people in Asia and the Pacific.
