Remains Of World’s Heaviest Whale Discovered In Peru

Islamabad: Scientists have discovered the remains of the heaviest sea creature ever found on Earth that lived 30 million years ago during excavation.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) report, this is the world’s oldest species of whale which is called Perucetus colossus in scientific terms.
According to researchers, the weight of this whale is around 200 tons which is why it is called the world’s largest whale. Scientists compared the size of the whale to that of the blue whale, indicating that the remains of the ancient whale could have been even heavier than the blue whale which is said to be the largest creature on Earth.
Based on the fossil remains of an ancient whale discovered in the desert of southern Peru, scientists believe that this whale lived about 39 million years ago. Researchers said the remains of the ancient whale were discovered 13 years ago and are now being analysed after a lot of hard work. Dr Eli Emson, a member of the team that discovered the remains, said that 18 bones of this giant whale have been recovered, including 13 vertebrae, four ribs, and part of a hip bone.
“Each bone weighed more than 100 kilograms, a very surprising discovery,” stated Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences Dr Rebecca Benion.
Al Jazeera reports that the whale was 20 meters (66 feet) long and weighed up to 340 metric tons, more than any other animal, including the blue whale and the largest dinosaur.
On the other hand, today’s largest known blue whale weighs around 190 tons, while the world’s largest dinosaur is estimated to weigh 100 tons.
The main characteristic of this whale is its weight which suggests that evolution produced organisms with features we can’t even imagine,” further said University of Pisa, Italy Biologist Giovanni Bianucci.
