NDMA Issues Flood, GLOF Alert Due To Rain Likelihood

News Desk

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Sunday issued a flood and glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) warning due to expected rain in Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Islamabad, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The NDMA advisory underscored that, according to the forecast of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), rain is likely to occur in Punjab, KP, GB, Islamabad, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir during the next 48 to 72 hours.

Flooding conditions are expected in the tributaries of the Kabul River and Hill Torrent of Dera Ghazi Khan Division from July 27 to 30. Due to the confluence of flows at Taunsa, Panjand, and Guddu Barrages, the high flood level may be reached on July 30 and the high flood level at Sukkur Barrage on July 31.

It is also anticipated that GB’s rivers and streams would flow faster and that GLOF would appear in mountain valleys.

The NDMA issued directives to the concerned departments outlining the need to alert the public in advance, promote safety precautions, and systematically monitor traffic heading towards sensitive areas in order to address any potential threats.

However, the relevant departments should keep equipment ready to handle emergencies. They should also take action to relocate those who live in low-lying areas.
