NA Recognises Int’l Support For Pakistan’s Effort To Tackle Climate Change

Islamabad: The National Assembly on Saturday unanimously recognised and expressed gratitude for the contributions of international and civil society organisations and the Pakistani diaspora in addressing climate change-related issues.

In a resolution moved by the Minister of State and Special Assistant to Prime Minister Romina Khurshid Alam, the government appreciated the assistance in rehabilitating vulnerable communities affected by climate-induced disasters.

The House underscored the urgent need for global cooperation to address climate change and reduce its detrimental effects. It recognised that extreme weather events, like the 2022 flood, have disproportionately impacted disadvantaged populations, creating a major strain on women and children and worsening current climate challenges.

Emphasising the importance of collaborative action, the House highlighted the significance of preserving and uplifting these neglected elements of society in the face of climate-related issues.

Islamic Relief Worldwide and the United Nations (UN) were specifically recognised and deeply appreciated for their vital roles in guiding Pakistan’s climate action. Their initiatives have facilitated the development of climate-resilient infrastructure, improved disaster risk management systems, and promoted sustainable livelihoods.

Encouraging the government of Pakistan to deepen partnerships with foreign organisations, the House underscored the potential benefits of harnessing their experience and resources to advance the country’s climate change mitigation policies and disaster risk reduction measures.

It also urged international organisations to continue supporting Pakistan’s efforts to fight climate change through knowledge exchange.

The House further highlighted the vital contributions of Pakistani benefactors both overseas and within Pakistan towards national economic prosperity.

Recognising their efforts, the House stressed the necessity of strengthening the bond between the nation and its diaspora.

Lastly, the House strongly pushed for the incorporation of gender mainstreaming and equality in all climate-related actions, highlighting the need to address the special issues faced by women in the context of climate change.
