Local Manufacturing of Smartphone Takes Over Commercial Imports

Islamabad: Between January and September 2022, local mobile phone production units established in the country have produced roughly 7.24 million smartphones and added 26,000 employments. Local manufacturing, which employs 16.70 million people, has surpassed commercial imports of 1.24 million.
According to an annual report of the PTA, its broader economic effects can be seen in the creation of a brand-new mobile ecosystem, the growth of a local handset manufacturing industry, the creation of jobs, investments from international mobile manufacturers, an increase in government revenue, and 100 per cent registration of handsets across all Pakistani cellular networks.
PTA issued the MDM Regulations 2021 which allow companies to acquire MDM authorization for 10 years.
As many as 30 authorizations have been issued so far. The list includes international brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, Nokia, Oppo, Vivo, Techno, and Infinix, and local brands like VGO Tel and E-Tachi, among others. Presently, 30 local factories are manufacturing features and smartphones, not just for the domestic market but also for export.
For the first time in Pakistan’s history, completely built units (CBU)phone import volume fell in 2021 as the majority of local demand was met by locally produced goods.
