Islamabad: Governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Faisal Karim Kundi visited the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Friday, where he received a comprehensive briefing on the country’s potential flood threats.

The session, chaired by NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, included detailed updates from heads of various departments on projected flood risks across major river systems, including the Indus, Kabul, Kurram, Kunhar, and Swat.

Officials warned that Dera Ismail Khan and adjoining areas could face severe destruction in the coming days due to possible intense flooding.

Expressing concern over the escalating impacts of climate change, Governor Kundi noted that extreme weather patterns were becoming increasingly evident and posed mounting challenges to disaster preparedness and management. He emphasized the urgent need for timely and effective preventive measures to minimize loss of life and property.

Appreciating NDMA’s preparedness and proactive strategies, the Governor assured full cooperation from the Governor House. He stressed the importance of establishing a one-window relief operation to ensure rapid and coordinated aid delivery during emergencies, also calling for the involvement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Governor Kundi further shared that the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center intended to provide homes for flood victims in Dera Ismail Khan, based on NDMA’s assessments. He urged the authority to facilitate land identification and allocation to support this initiative under its supervision.

Promotion of Technical Education Discussed

Later, at the Governor House Islamabad, Governor Kundi met with the Chairperson of the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), Gulmina Bilal Ahmed, to discuss the promotion of technical education in KP.

The Governor underscored NAVTTC’s vital role in empowering youth and advancing economic development through skills-based training.

The two discussed a proposal to reserve special quotas in vocational institutes for children of martyred security personnel from KP and Balochistan, particularly in institutions named after Shaheed IG Safwat Ghayur — a move hailed as a meaningful tribute to national heroes.

They also explored the possibility of offering scholarships to KP students for higher education in universities in the United Kingdom.

During the meeting, the Chairperson handed over the NAVTTC registration certificate for Gomal University, which the Governor welcomed as a positive development for students in the province.
