Islamabad: In a landmark decision, the federal cabinet has approved Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s proposal to elevate Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal.

This rare honour comes in recognition of his exceptional leadership during Pakistan’s recent military victory in the “Marka-e-Haq,” following an unprovoked Indian aggression on the night of May 6 and 7.

The cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Sharif, met to discuss a five-point agenda covering political, economic, and security matters, as well as budgetary plans for the upcoming fiscal year.

However, the highlight of the session was the unanimous decision to promote General Munir — a move that marks only the second time in Pakistan’s history such a rank has been awarded.

Tribute to Leadership and Valor

The cabinet hailed General Munir’s strategic brilliance, valor, and unwavering commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Members commended the armed forces for their decisive victory and praised their role in safeguarding the lives of civilians and national interests under extraordinary circumstances.

The session also began with a special prayer (Fatiha) for the martyrs of the conflict, acknowledging the sacrifices made by Pakistan’s forces and civilians. Cabinet members lauded the unity and resilience displayed by the Pakistani nation during this critical period.

National Security Update

Prime Minister Sharif briefed the cabinet on the current post-war environment, detailing key strategic and defense-related developments. Officials confirmed that the conflict began with an unprovoked assault by Indian forces, which tragically resulted in the deaths of several innocent civilians, including women and children.

Cabinet members further appreciated the constructive role of the Pakistani media in fostering national cohesion and reinforcing a unified narrative during the crisis.

Air Chief’s Tenure Extended

In another significant decision, the federal cabinet extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu. The extension was granted in recognition of his exceptional service and leadership throughout the recent military engagement.

The cabinet emphasized that Pakistan’s military success has not only lifted national morale but also bolstered the country’s global credibility and strategic standing.

This historic promotion of General Asim Munir to Field Marshal reflects the government’s recognition of military excellence and symbolizes a defining moment in Pakistan’s defense history.
