Scorching Heatwave Grips Pakistan as Temperatures Soar Above 40°C
News Desk
Islamabad: A relentless heatwave continues to sweep across Pakistan, pushing temperatures to dangerous levels and prompting health and disaster management authorities to issue urgent advisories.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Lahore is expected to record a maximum temperature of 42°C today, while Islamabad and Peshawar will also endure intense heat with highs reaching 41°C.
Although relatively cooler, Quetta and Karachi are forecasted to hit 36°C, with some areas of Karachi potentially reaching 40°C due to localized heat effects.
Despite a forecast of evening showers in northern and hilly regions—including Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and surrounding areas—the vast plains and major cities are likely to remain dry and unbearably hot for the next two to three days.
In Punjab, the searing heat has taken a visible toll, with roads reportedly melting under extreme surface temperatures. The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an official warning, cautioning residents that temperatures could spike further by May 19, intensifying the already harsh conditions in the region.
Health officials have advised the public to take preventive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses. Key recommendations include staying indoors during peak sunlight hours, drinking plenty of water and cold fluids, wearing protective headgear, and avoiding strenuous activities. Special care is advised for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with underlying health conditions.
The soaring demand for cold beverages reflects the nationwide struggle to cope with the heat. With no immediate relief expected, authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize their well-being during this period of extreme weather.
