Islamabad: The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed a new case of polio in District Torghar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), marking the second case reported from the province and the seventh nationwide this year.

The confirmation comes as Pakistan carries out its second National Immunization Days (NID) campaign of the year, running from April 21 to 27. The campaign aims to vaccinate 45.4 million children under the age of five across all districts, including Torghar. A subsequent round is scheduled from May 26 to June 1.

Health officials are reiterating the importance of repeated polio vaccinations, urging parents to ensure their children are immunized during each campaign.

“This is a critical opportunity to protect children from a preventable yet crippling disease,” said a representative of the Polio Eradication Programme. “We appeal to all parents and caregivers: don’t miss the chance—get your children vaccinated during the ongoing campaign.”

Despite progress in reducing the number of cases, the persistence of the poliovirus in certain areas underscores the need for sustained and widespread immunization efforts.
