Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a major initiative to restore Murree’s historic Mall Road, aiming to revive the town’s past tourism glory after 167 years.

“The historical beauty of Murree will be restored within a year,” the CM stated, emphasizing that this effort is part of the Murree Tourism Development Plan, launched by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

The Walled City Authority Lahore, in collaboration with experts and local stakeholders, will implement the Rs 550 million project to transform Murree into a premier tourism destination in both Punjab and Pakistan.

CM Maryam Nawaz assured that no compromises would be made on the project’s quality. “Murree must be transformed into a global tourism hub,” she stressed, highlighting additional developments such as the Glass Train project and the construction of a modern hospital to enhance tourism infrastructure.

To oversee the restoration, the CM appointed Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb as head of the steering committee for the Murree Development Project. “We will restore historical footpaths, improve cleanliness, and ensure maximum facilities for tourists,” she said.

The project will focus on:

  • Restoring shops and buildings along Mall Road to their original architectural style.
  • Introducing uniform advertisement boards to maintain aesthetics.
  • Installing historically styled electric lights to illuminate the area.
  • Creating a public square (Crossroads) to revive Murree’s charm.
  • Building modern washrooms for the convenience of tourists and locals.

The initiative aims to restore Murree’s identity as a world-class tourist destination, blending history with modern amenities.
