Islamabad: The Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) on Friday conducted an operation resulting in the seizure and destruction of 165 kilograms of meat deemed unfit for human consumption.

The supplier was fined Rs 50,000, and a case has been registered against them.

IFA Deputy Director of Operations Dr. Tahira Siddique stated that the operation was conducted ahead of the holy month of Ramazan.

During the crackdown, food safety teams (FSTs) intercepted a vehicle carrying substandard meat in the Thana Nune area.

She explained that the meat, stored in violation of food safety regulations, was found unfit for consumption following a detailed inspection by veterinary specialists. It lacked necessary documentation, including traceability records and official seals.

Additionally, the meat was improperly concealed using non-food-grade sheets, further violating safety protocols. The seized meat, which emitted a foul odor, was intended for supply to various hotels across Islamabad.

Dr. Tahira Siddique emphasized that consuming substandard meat poses severe health risks, particularly affecting the stomach, liver, and intestines. She reaffirmed the IFA’s zero-tolerance policy toward food adulteration, warning that those compromising public health for profit would face strict legal action.

She further stated that the IFA remains committed to eliminating such hazardous practices and ensuring compliance with food safety standards. As part of its ongoing efforts, the authority has intensified inspections to prevent unsafe food from reaching consumers, especially with Ramazan approaching.

Meanwhile, Dr Siddique urged citizens to exercise caution when purchasing meat. She advised them to verify its quality and avoid pre-packaged or pre-cut meat products that may not meet safety standards.

The IFA’s swift action highlights its dedication to protecting consumers from health hazards posed by unscrupulous food suppliers, reinforcing its role in maintaining public health and food safety standards in the federal capital.
