Islamabad: Sialkot’s handmade hockey sticks, available in two styles—composite and wood—are renowned globally for their unique craftsmanship and artistry.

With approximately 200,000 sticks produced annually, the industry generates substantial revenue and solidifies Pakistan’s presence in the global sports equipment market.

A Growing Global Market

A recent report by a private news channel highlights Sialkot’s emergence as a key player in the global hockey stick market. The city’s handmade sticks are exported worldwide, symbolizing Pakistani craftsmanship and making a significant contribution to Pakistan’s economy.

Sialkot’s sports goods industry, particularly its handmade hockey sticks, has become a global phenomenon. The city’s manufacturers cater to a significant portion of the world’s hockey demand, reinforcing Pakistan’s legacy as a top-ranked hockey nation.

Meeting International Demands

According to Khawar Anwar, a factory owner in Sialkot, foreign players largely prefer composite hockey sticks. However, European schools mandate the use of wooden sticks, leading to high demand for Pakistani-made, Sialkot-crafted wooden hockey sticks.

“We produce two distinct types of hockey sticks: composite sticks, favored by professional players for their lightweight and durability, and wooden sticks, preferred by schools and training institutions in Europe due to their traditional feel and regulatory requirements,” Anwar explained. “Both varieties are meticulously crafted to meet the highest standards of quality and performance.”

Exceptional Craftsmanship

Qamar Baig, a production manager at a Sialkot factory, emphasized that their company tailors production to meet specific customer demands. The focus on high-quality craftsmanship has enabled them to generate substantial revenue and establish a reputation for excellence in the industry.

“Our success is attributed to the exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into each stick,” Baig noted. “This has earned us a loyal customer base worldwide.”

The Art of Hockey Stick Manufacturing

A worker at the Sialkot factory elaborated on the meticulous process of preparing the hockey sticks. The process begins with the careful selection of high-quality wood, typically sourced from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

“The wood is then cut and shaped to precise specifications before undergoing a specialized treatment process to enhance durability and strength,” the worker explained. “Each stick goes through intricate steps, including shaping, sanding, and polishing, to achieve the perfect balance of weight, flexibility, and performance.”

Finally, the sticks undergo a rigorous quality inspection before being packaged and shipped to customers worldwide.

Global Recognition and Endorsements

Professional hockey players and institutions worldwide recognize the superiority of Sialkot-made hockey sticks.

“I have been using Sialkot-made hockey sticks for years, and I can confidently say they are the best in the world,” said a professional hockey player from Germany. “The quality is exceptional, the craftsmanship is impeccable, and the performance is unmatched. I have tried other brands, but none compare to the Sialkot sticks.”

Similarly, a European sports training institution representative praised the sticks’ durability, responsiveness, and consistency.

“The sticks are exactly what our players need to perform at their best,” they stated.

Sialkot’s hockey stick manufacturers continue to make Pakistan proud by supplying top-quality sports equipment to international markets. Their dedication to craftsmanship and quality ensures that Sialkot remains a global leader in the hockey stick industry.
