Margalla Hills to Get a Green Makeover
News Desk
Islamabad: The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) has initiated an ambitious plantation drive to restore and protect the natural beauty of Margalla Hills, a key national heritage site. The campaign aims to rejuvenate the green landscape of the Margalla Ridge through an extensive rewilding project.
In a symbolic gesture marking the launch of the initiative, IWMB planted Chir Pine saplings along the Margalla Ridge. The event witnessed the active participation of several prominent figures, including Member of the National Assembly Isphanyar M. Bhandara, renowned journalist Nasim Zehra, and activist Nilofer Qazi.
Dozens of schoolchildren also took part in the rewilding project, reinforcing the importance of environmental conservation and ecological restoration, according to a press release.
To further engage the community, IWMB has introduced a weekly campaign inviting both schoolchildren and prominent citizens of Islamabad to plant local tree species at the site.
The primary goal of the initiative is to restore the ridge to its former ecological splendor, creating a lush green Margalla viewpoint that will remain accessible to the public free of charge.
The rewilding project is being implemented in two phases.
The first phase, currently in progress, focuses on making the site accessible and safe for visitors. Immediate efforts include repairing the area, installing safety grills, benches, and parking facilities, as well as conducting site clearing and greening measures.
This initiative underscores IWMB’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the preservation of Pakistan’s natural heritage. Through collective efforts, the campaign seeks to enhance biodiversity, combat deforestation, and promote a greener, healthier environment for future generations.
